Not everyone will have money to spend on gifts when you’re broke. Maybe times are tough and maybe you are looking for a new way to start the year out right with less debt. These top five gifts to give when you’re broke take into consideration all holidays, events, get-togethers, birthdays and more so give a gift when you’re broke and don’t worry about skipping the party because there’s no money in your pocket.
Regifting When You’re Broke
We have all heard of regifting and though some you feel this practice of giving a gift when you’re broke that someone else paid for is wrong, there is nothing “righter”. Regifting is a means of green gift giving when you’re broke.
Want to make the gift when you’re broke all the more special? Combine several items into a basket or bowl, depending on the items being regifted.
Borrow Food and Give the Gift of Food When You’re Broke
Walk, ride, jog or thumb your way to a family member’s house and borrow a few ingredients. Just because you have no idea how to gift when you’re broke does not mean you can’t cook. Throw together a few ingredients one family member is willing to part with or hit up more than one family member for a full meal. This gift when you’re broke is one that tastes great and touches the heart strings.
Be Creative and Write a Book as a Gift When You’re Broke
You don’t have to be the best writer on the face of the earth to put together a collection of short stories as a gift when you’re broke. Short stories can be original or a retelling of life’s adventures. The cost is nil, at most, as the only thing you need is a computer and printer and those you can borrow from a friend or the local library. This gift when you’re broke can take some time so it’s best to prepare well in advance and start writing today.
Freelance Writers can Give Residual Gifts When You’re Broke
There is nothing better than a gift when you’re broke that keeps on giving. Freelance writers can sign up for an account and link the residual payments to a friend or family member. This may be a gift to give when you’re broke, but it could add up so some serious cash. Don’t write too much for the account, but dedicate one article per day. At first, this gift when you’re broke may seem worthless, but over time it could be worth hundreds of dollars or more.
Pass Off Time as a Gift When You’re Broke
One thing you do have to gift when you’re broke is time. Give a friend or family member time for housework, babysitting or other task instead of spending money on a gift when you’re broke. Broke means no money so there would be nothing to spend anyway. Time is often a powerful gift when you’re broke that people tend to forget or take for granted.

Write down gift list names in alphabetical order, last name first. This will make them easier to find later. If you need to mail gift, write down updated address. If necessary, contact someone who has an updated address and correct your records. Jot down some recall notes about individual or family. Keep your notes in bullet form. For example, “collects Butterflies” or “Boy Scout” or “devout Catholic,” “likes home cooked meals.” This way, you can plan on a special subject gift. Include family member names and ages if you have them. Try to put down notes that allow you to select a gift that will be unique and special, not a “re-gifting” type item. Start file folders per family or individual, include digital photos of similar gifts, magazine tear sheets, pictures, sketches, and notes of simple items you want to copy and enhance, i.e., a painted white drink mug, some special note cards, kids picture album for grandparents, a childhood home photo, a kids toy box on wheels specially identified with name, a frozen special meal.

Print out a master list with names and have each of your immediate family members brainstorm their notes and ideas for great gifts. Make it a fun time for your family and a family tradition for years to come. Put a final updated list on your crafts worktable or workbench or prime location for the entire family to see and check on the progress being made to complete the gifts and distribution. These are unique and personalized gifts that you can make that will create a lasting impression.
Award /Certificate – Make a small homemade certificate using your word processor. Frame the certificate. It doesn’t have to be big – you can make one to fit a regular 4×6 picture frame. This will really make a cute and delightful gift!
Balloon in a Box – Surprise your recipient with this unique gift! Put a helium balloon in a box and anchor the end of the string with something heavy to stop it from floating away. It’s more meaningful than a store-bought cake (and healthier too, since you can control the sugar content). Many cake recipes can be found online when you search “birthday cake ideas”. If you don’t like making it from scratch or if you’re pressed for time, you can use ready-mix cake and ready-to-use icing.
Birthday Calendar- This is ideal especially for big families. Compile a list of birthdays, anniversaries and special dates to remember, print the names out on labels, and stick the labels on the corresponding dates on a wall calendar (even a free wall calendar will do!). Make multiple copies at once to save time, and give to members of the family to put at home or in the office. It’s useful & sure to be appreciated!
Brag Book – For proud new parents this would be a nice welcome baby gift. Take pictures of the baby and make a small brag book that they can proudly show to others.
Cake in a Mug- Yes, a cake for one that bakes in a microwave! Search for “cake in a mug” recipes on the web for great ideas.
Can of Goodies – With a little imagination you can make, for example, a can of delicious nuts and a little stuffed toy into a very cute gift. CD Clock- This is easy to do and it really makes a unique gift. This is how to make a personalized CD clock: Make your own CD label with a design that fits your recipient’s personality. Stick it on the CD. If you have old unusable CDs this is a good way to make use of them. Now for the clockworks: You can buy a clock from the dollar store or craft store and use its clockworks. Remove the clockworks and insert it to the ready-made hole in the middle of the CD. You can use a glue gun to glue the back of the CD to the clock to keep it from moving. Assemble back the hours and seconds hands. And there you have it, your personalized CD clock! You can attach a string at the back so your recipient can hang the CD clock, or you can include a little plate stand (which you can also find at the dollar store). This gift is suitable for almost any occasion: birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, etc. You can make this into a really beautiful gift. It’s very memorable and costs only a little to make.
CD Photo Album – If you have tons of digital pictures taken, you can burn them into a disc and attach a nice CD label. This is also an ideal gift to give to a relative or friend who’s far away. You can mail it to your recipient using a bubble-wrap envelope.
Ceramic Mug with Chocolates – Put kisses chocolates on a clear cellophane bag and tie it off with metallic colored ribbons. Fill the half bottom of the mug with shredded colored paper & put the chocolate bag on top. Finish it off with a personalized gift tag.

Child’s Handprint- Apply a water-based paint on a child’s hand and press on paper. Add a poem (you can search for handprint poems online for ideas) and frame it, or cut the handprint out and turn it into a magnet by pasting it into a cardstock & attaching a self-adhesive magnet.
Chocolate Coated Spoons – Melt chocolate chips or squares in a double boiler, stirring frequently until smooth. Remove from heat and allow it to cool a bit. Then dip the spoons in the melted chocolate until it covers the top part of the spoon (use good, heavy spoons). Place the spoons on wax paper to set. You can put several spoons in an attractive mug with hot cocoa packets or coffee beans.

You can print the recipes out and paste them on a nice notebook or insert them in a small binder, or if you have time type them out in nice fonts. Then personalize & decorate the front cover. This unique gift is one that will be cherished & used over and over again.
Day-to-Day Calendar – Give a 365 day calendar and for each page write a “why I love you” reason. This takes time to make but is a one-of-a-kind gift that will really, really surprise your loved one!
Desktop Flip Album – You can turn a flip style stand calendar into a desktop flip album by gluing pictures on each page of the calendar. Make use of outdated calendars and turn them into flip albums for relatives and friends.
Desserts – Make your special dessert, then include the recipe and wrap it attractively. People appreciate homemade kitchen desserts. It doesn’t matter how simple the dessert is, it’s the thought behind making it that counts.
Dried Flowers – Use the bounty from your garden to make wreathes, potpourri or dried bouquets.
Family Recipe Collection Book- Collect recipes from family & relatives that they are known for, like for example Mom’s famous honey-lemon chicken, Aunt Sharon’s yummy clam chowder soup, or cousin Stephanie’s scrumptious chocolate cake….compile them together into a nice recipe book using your word processor.
